The true story of Jane Alexander, who spent 13 years tracking down and putting away the man who murdered her 88-year old aunt, and then went on to help solve 20 murders, igniting a national victim's rights movement.

Jane Alexander had it all a wonderful family, a beautiful home on three acres just north of San Francisco, and a deep romance with Tom O'Donnell. A family friend for 25 years prior to their romance, Tom helped Jane cope with the death of her husband and captivated her with his charming, unflappable personality. But Jane's picturesque life came crashing down the morning that her beloved aunt was savagely murdered. Slowly, astonishingly, the evidence began to point to the last person Jane would ever believe capable of such an act Tom O'Donnell. She soon discovered that he had fled with thousands of dollars of her money, forcing her to sell her possessions and move into a dilapidated old house. Jane would eventually learn that she was his next victim he had secretly taken out a million dollar life insurance policy on her. With and unresponsive criminal justice system and almost everyone telling her that her quest was futile, Jane devoted her entire life to tracking him down and forcing the system to do its job and get justice for her beloved aunt.

But the story does not stop there along the way, Jane met dozens of people with similar horror stories a savagely murdered loved one, a justice system that refused to function. She and Jan Miller, whose daughter was murdered during summer break at Chico State University in a case still unsolved, founded Citizens Against Homicide to fight back for the victim's families. At the time of Jane Alexander's death in 2008, they had helped solve 20 cold case murders, were working on 500 homicide investigations, and had seen their organization spread to all 50 states, with more than 5,000 members.

I really loved this book and had a tough time putting it down. I can usually tell right away if a book is going to keep me interested and this one did right from the get go. It's truly amazing that there are people in this world that can go through life scamming innocent people and so many get away with it. That is another reason Citizen Jane is so good because this victim didn't let the scammer (and murderer) get away with it. Even though it took years for justice to prevail, it finally did. It's an eye opener for sure, but it also has a great (long over due) outcome. What a total uphill battle for Jane, but she persevered and it paid off. She certainly is a great resource for others that have had issues like this.

Citizen Jane (Audible Audio Edition) James Dalessandro Kevin Pierce Crossroad Press Books Reviews

This is an older true crime story. I was on board after the first few pages and couldn't put it down. Well written with great character development. Jane Alexander is a true hero. She was educated, a mother of six, a widow, a friend, a loyal person who was betrayed by a con man. She lost her aunt, her home, her life as she knew it. Her activism for victim right is admirable, important and simply amazing.
One of the most amazing true crime stories I have ever read is Jane Alexander's 13 year battle to find, capture and convict the man who murdered her aunt. What is even more amazing is that she did not stop there she formed an organization - Citizens Against Homicide - to help hundreds of other people find justice. I've now read all three of James Dalessandro's books - 1906 and Bohemian Heart - and they are all superb. His story telling skills here are lean, sparse, and emotional. I don't know why he hasn't produced more books, but I have loved all three I read.
I thought this was just another true crime book, but it's a good story about persevering through the heartache of losing a loved one as the truth came out about who was guilty of the crime. This revelation on top of the actual crime tore the main character's life apart. I enjoyed the book, but could have done without the inside look at the different characters' political leanings as I didn't think it added anything to the story.
Excellent viewing but reading the book is a must, as there was so much more to the story than the movie could portray because of time. We watched the movie first, and it prompted us to read the book. Jane Alexander should be remembered for what she accomplished.
a true story about one woman's quest for justice for her murdered aunt and her frustrating struggle through the legal system. faced with one obstacle after another and betrayal by her lover who turns out to be the villain she soldiers bravely on through eleven years of changing legal and law enforcement personnel until she finally achieves success. and in the process, sets up an entity to help others in her same position. great story about a brave woman.
Having grown up in California, this book held special interest for me. Although long and involved it held my interest from the first page to the last. I always felt mature women who were taken in by con men couldn't be quite bright. This story gave me new insight into how that can happen even with extremely intelligent women like Jane.
I thought I would be disappointed with this book given that early on it's self apparent who committed the murder. But I wasn't. James Dalessandro did a nice job keeping me interested with details of the crime that would later come back to haunt the perpetrator. He also throws you a couple little curves in discovering some circumstantial evidence long after the crime has been committed. The effect here is that of shoving you the reader over the edge in establishing guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. At one point with the introduction of new evidence, even the defendant puts his face into his hands. A story of the triumph of a victim and victims everywhere this one will not disappoint you.
