Sometimes you just want to be perfect. And you obsess and fail and hold on way too tight....until it hurts. Then you let go and find your awesomeness in not being perfect all.

For sixteen-year-old Francie Mills, life in the burbs is looking like everyone else's...kind of mediocre and boring. She hates her all-girl school, loves her best friend, is annoyed by her parents, REALLY wants something exciting to happen, and is obsessed with being amazing at tennis. Okay, maybe the tennis thing is not so ordinary, but still, it would totally solve everything.

But lately her dad's drinking has been spiraling out of control and her tennis is tanking because of her knee injury and she’s left feeling different and alone without a way out.

Enter Chet Jones, lead singer of "garage-port band" Blues Harp Jones. Somehow he gets Francie, makes her feel special and is so cute! She falls hard, like how-can-this-be-happening-when-I-just-met-you?-but-I-totally-feel-this-weird-and-deep-connection hard. What does it mean? What are all these feelings? Am I insane?

Questions, feelings, hopes and imperfections swirl as Francie takes un-boring risks to see Chet's band play in L.A,, making new friends in goth Stella and "would-be Martin Scorcese" Eddie. Eddie falls for Francie with his sweet, quirky honesty but he's not as exciting as Chet which leaves Francie even more confused. But as Francie struggles with her questions and feelings of self-doubt and anger at her father's failures, she comes to a new understanding about human connections and realizes that if someone lets you down (or you let yourself down!), you can always pick yourself up and be loved, as is, maybe even loving yourself, flaws and all, as you find a little hope in the universe.

"If Woody Allen were a teenaged girl..." That's what I thought when I first started reading this book. Francie is so angsty. She ruminates over every scenario, every sentence, ever thought, like all of Woody Allen's heroes. In an era where women are supposed to be portrayed as strong, capable, and confident, it's a bold move to put Francie Mills in the mindset of a real teenaged girl with problems. Sometimes she feels like she's drowning in them, sometimes she feels like she's rising above them.

A would-be tennis star, Francie wants to take flight and leave the house, her parents and their gaping wounds and flaws behind. Then she meets Chet, a beautiful, special, talented boy who inspires her escape first figuratively, then literally. Eventually she realizes that what she really needs and yearns for is the love and support that she no longer feels from her dad. Through her pursuit of Chet, she finds these things in a couple of unexpected friends and partners-in-crime.

Anyone growing up in a less than ideal childhood will be able to relate to the struggle Francie faces between trying to make something of one's own as a teenager while being held back by the "sins of the father." I enjoyed Francie's angst, joys and her small but monumental realizations.

Blues Harp Green eBook Nicole Schubert Reviews

I found this book personally healing. It does a great job illustrating the effects of dysfunctional families on the children who grow up in them.
Our teen years are a challenging time for us all. But the insecurity in Francie's home leads her to put too much pressure on herself to succeed socially and at sports, which robs her of much of the fun of adolescence. Most anyone who's had similar experiences as the book's heroin can look forward to a relatable read.
What happens next? The book was an easy read that took me along on the ups and downs with these characters. I was sympathetic to their situations and remembered having to deal with similar ones at their age......the desire to just forget and thinking someone else's life is so much better........just loved the book. Left me wanting more.
Wow did that bring me back to being a teenager! Had a good laugh in so many spots (and also made me happy I am past that stage!). I think it really touched on what teenagers go through but can't quite grasp- first love, alcoholism and sports to name a couple. I can feel a sequel in the works! Good job!
I thought this book was really well done.It really does sound like a valley girl wrote it. I mean that in a good way. Sometimes when you read a a YA novel you can tell an adult wrote it and that isn't the case here.

The story itself is pretty heartbreaking. I got done reading it and I was just sad for Francie and her parents. I had to watch something funny afterward.
What a sweet and honest look into teenage life. I agonized with Francie as she faced teen challenges coupled with a difficult family dynamic. The writer brought all of the characters to life making it impossible not to see little bits of yourself in each of them. Loved it!!
Blues Harp Green is real and true, fresh, alive, witty and fun. Heartbreaking too. It was almost like I was holding a piece of this teen girl's soul in my hands rather than merely a book.

I could very much relate to the protagonist's viewpoint as if I was a teen myself. Oh, but that was so long ago! Thank you for taking me back to those days of discovery, novelty, uncertainty.

My wish for Francie is that she is mostly in the company of people who get her and that she is happy. She is a good kid. )
Blues Harp Green has it all teenage drama, alcoholism, parental strife, the pain of first love, and yet it was such fun read! This book sucked me in so quickly I had to finish it in a night! The author nailed being a teenager perfectly. We've all had those moments of caring, not caring, wanting, not wanting and all the while wishing to be somewhere... anywhere else. The author created a character you can relate to, that you feel for and that you're connected to. Well done! I'm hoping for a sequel! I want to know what happens to Francie Mills!
